Introduction

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at The Aga Khan University is a leading academic and diagnostic center that supports patient care across Pakistan through its comprehensive laboratory services. The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) Clinical Laboratory is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and delivers high-quality diagnostic services through its main campus laboratory, a wide network of specimen collection units, and Stat laboratories.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine comprises five major sections: Chemical Pathology, Hematology & Transfusion Medicine, Histopathology, Microbiology, and Molecular Pathology. The Histopathology section plays a critical role in disease diagnosis and patient management through accurate reporting and documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Report and interpret all tests being performed in section of Microbiology for which s(he) is credentialled.
  • Advise prophylaxis/prevention, management and treatment of infections through rounds, consults or telephonic advice as appropriate.
  • Liaise with clinicians in the community to provide early reports and advice.
  • Provide clinical advice on test result interpretation to requesting physicians and patients; where necessary, discuss with other hospital departments.
  • Advise infection control team and assist in outbreak investigations and surveillance.
  • Engage in quality assurance activities including planning validation, verification of assays, quality indicators, IQCPs where applicable, staff training etc.
  • Develop and review SOPs, policies, forms and feasibility of new services.
  • Actively participate in quality audits and initiatives such as College of American Pathologists (CAP), Joint Commission International Accreditation (JCIA) and others.
  • Participate in Department administrative committee as assigned by sectional head / Dept Chairperson participate in Institutional CME and public awareness program.
  • Professional Development – Participate in sectional/Departmental/Institutional/ National and International Meetings/ Conferences/ Sessions/ Workshops etc. (Subject to funds availability).

Requirements

  • MBBS and FCPS or FRC Path in Medical Microbiology with valid PMDC license.
  • At least 5 years of undergraduate training in Microbiology, with a minimum of one month rotation in Infection Control and 2 months in Infectious Diseases.
  • Skills, knowledge and acumen to deliver timely, and accurate diagnosis, with effective communication, resulting in improved patient care.
  • Good grasp of infection control and prevention concepts to assure safety of patients, healthcare workers and community.
  • The expertise and skills to deliver quality assured accurate reports for patient care.
