Guide Fitter
Job Description
The Guide Fitter responsible for assembling, disassembling, and maintaining rolling mill guiding systems and their components. Carry out maintenance, fitting, and repair tasks to ensure reliable operation of all mill guides used in the line. Perform adjustments, inspect and calibrate guide equipment during mill stoppages, and check overall equipment condition. Assist and coordinate with operators, technicians, and supervisors to support smooth, efficient, and safe production.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Production & Process Control
• Install, adjust, and align entry, delivery, and twist guides for all rolling stands according to standard setup sheets.
• Ensure proper guide geometry, clearance, and water line orientation to maintain bar quality and dimensional accuracy.
• Conduct pre-operation checks to confirm smooth bar entry without rubbing or twisting.
• Reduce mill delays by addressing guide misalignment, leaks, or mechanical issues promptly
Compliance & Regulatory Standards
• Ensure compliance with IMS requirements (QMS, EMS, OHSAS/ISO 45001) within rolling mill operations.
• Follow IMS standards (KWS ISO 6935-2, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001) and Kuwait Steel’s Code of Conduct.
• Comply always with SOPs, safe work practices, and PPE requirements.
Safety & Emergency Management
• Follow all safety procedures related to hot work, confined spaces, and rotating equipment.
• Use PPE correctly and handle guides safely during setup and removal.
• Report unsafe conditions, leaks, or hazards immediately, and assist in emergency response when required.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
• Required Qualifications:
- Vocational/Technical Certificate or Diploma in Fields such as Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial Maintenance or related technical fields.
• Preferred Experience:
- Vocational/Technical Certificate: Minimum 5 Years of experience in rolling mills as a guide fitter including mill guide fittings, alignment and basic mechanical maintenance.
- Diploma: Minimum 3 Years of experience in rolling mills as a guide fitter including mill guide fittings, alignment and basic mechanical maintenance.
- Relevant Experience may include the following:
o Experience in rolling mills process and operation or similar heavy mill process plants.
o Experience coordinating with mill operators, stand fitters, and maintenance during outages and cobble recovery.
Job-Specific Skills:
- Ability to identify bar rubbing, twisting, vibration, or misalignment issues.
- Ability to use mechanical measuring tools (feeler gauges, dial indicators, micrometers).
- Knowledge of basic equipment calibration, adjustment, and operation.
- Proficient in basic root-cause identification for guide-related problems.
- Knowledgeable in operating and adjusting machinery safely and correctly.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment such as overhead crane and forklift. (Advantage)
- Can read drawings and have knowledge in basic scientific calculations. (Advantage)
- Knowledge of basic welding, gas cutting and simple fabrication.
- Ability to maintain discipline, punctuality, and teamwork.
- Strong adherence to safety Standards, SOPs lockout/tagout, and emergency procedures
- Strong situational awareness, problem-solving, and communication skills
