Contract: Fixed-term, subject to annual performance review

Salary range and benefits: USD 800–1,000 per month, commensurate with experience

Position overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF), one of the world’s leading non-profit organisations operating at the intersection of environmental protection and human rights. The Field Researcher will support EJF’s work in Indonesia by contributing to broad research activities related to fisheries governance, labour conditions, and environmental protection. Working closely with the Field Research Manager and the wider research team, the role will involve engaging in various field-based activities and engaging with communities and stakeholders to help deliver on EJF’s campaign objectives. 

The successful candidate will assist in interview data collection and analysis - ensuring that such information is accurate and appropriately managed. They will also be expected to formulate written outputs based on interview findings to further EJF’s objectives in Indonesia. The Field Researcher will join a committed team in Indonesia and collaborate with EJF colleagues globally. The team works to promote transparency, good governance, and improved stewardship of marine resources. This position offers valuable professional development within an internationally respected organisation dedicated to environmental protection and human rights.

Key responsibilities

Conduct structured interviews with fishers to learn about their experiences on board fishing vessels. 

Conduct analysis of interview results to identify trends, patterns and key points to drive EJF’s advocacy objectives.

Collaborate with the research team in conducting research into the recruitment industry.

Draft and contribute to briefings, reports, and public-facing publications based on fieldwork findings. 

Collaborate with local civil society partners to support grassroots advocacy and community engagement.

Work closely with EJF’s international teams to convert field findings into evidence-based advocacy materials and awareness-raising content.

 Essential skills and attributes.

Demonstrated ability to assess risks and apply personal and operational safety measures in field-based research settings.

Strong interpersonal and listening skills, with the ability to conduct respectful, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive interviews.

A minimum of one year of experience in field research, including direct data collection from first-hand sources; experience in journalism, investigative reporting, or human rights documentation is highly desirable.

Strong ability to work across diverse networks and operate effectively in field-based and mobile environments.

Advanced proficiency in English, with excellent written communication skills required for reporting, documentation, and correspondence.

Demonstrated ability in data analysis and in developing clear, evidence-based narratives, with meticulous attention to detail, accuracy, and precision.

Desirable Skills and attributes

Previous experience working on issues related to human rights, labour rights, migration, and trafficking.

Familiarity with the fisheries sector, particularly distant-water fishing, documented abuses, or supply-chain transparency issues.

Working knowledge of open-source intelligence (OSINT) tools and techniques, including vessel tracking platforms, social media analysis, and public records research.

A clean driver's licence and access to a vehicle.
