Roll Shop Machinist
Job Description
The Roll Shop Machinist Operate and maintain lathe, branding, drilling, milling, and grinding machines, as well as other turning equipment, with precision and accuracy. Handle the fabrication and preparation of rolls, rollers, blades, guides, and other components required for smooth and continuous rolling operations. Inspect and interpret technical drawings and specifications to understand project requirements and ensure accurate execution. Clean, lubricate, and perform regular maintenance on machinery to maintain optimal performance and identify worn or damaged parts requiring replacement.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Production & Process Control
β’ Adjust and operate lathes, milling, drilling, and grinding machines to fabricate or repair mechanical parts as per specifications.
β’ Record and perform machining of rolls, guide rollers, and other components according to approved drawings and CNC programs.
β’ Calibrate and maintain dimensional accuracy within specified tolerances using precision measuring tools.
β’ Check and plan machining sequences efficiently to minimize cycle time and material waste.
β’ Assist coordination in verifying finished components against drawings to ensure defect-free and compliant output
Compliance & Regulatory Standards
β’ Operate in compliance with IMS requirements (QMS, EMS, OHSAS/ISO 45001) within rolling mill operations.
β’ Inspect adherence to IMS standards (KWS ISO 6935-2, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001) and Kuwait Steelβs Code of Conduct
β’ Handle tasks according to SOPs, safe practices, and required PPE standards to maintain a safe and compliant work environment.
Safety & Emergency Management
β’ Follow all safety procedures related to machining, tool handling, and rotating equipment.
β’ Ensure proper use of guards, PPE, and secure clamping methods during machining operations.
β’ Report unsafe conditions, equipment malfunctions, or near misses immediately to the supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
β’ Required Qualifications: -
-Vocational/Technical Certificate or Diploma in Fields such as Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial Maintenance, Machining, Manufacturing, Tool & Die Technology or related technical fields.
β’ Preferred Experience: -
-Vocational/Technical Certificate: Minimum 5 Years Experience as a Machinist in steel plants, rolling mills or heavy process industries.
-Diploma: Minimum 3 Years Experience as a Machinist in steel plants, rolling mills or heavy process industries.
- Relevant Experience may include the following: o Experience in Machining and refurbishment of mill rolls, Guide roller, Shear blades and Mechanical spare parts o Experience in lathe operations, roll turning, CNC operation, milling, grinding and branding machines.
β’ Job-Specific Skills:
- Knowledgeable in CNC machining (program loading, offsets, simple edits).
- Knowledgeable in dimensional inspection and tolerance control.
- Knowledgeable in preventive maintenance tasks on machine tools.
- Understanding of shutdown machining support and urgent breakdown part fabrication.
- Understanding of Equipment setup, calibration, and process adjustments.
- Skilled to analyze tool wear for Vibration/chatter, Dimensional deviations and surface finish.
- Competence in recording operational data, logs, and equipment history.
- Discipline to check equipment condition, product quality, and safety compliance.
- Teamwork to assist/coordinate with operators, technicians, and supervisors during operations.
- Proficient in using measuring tools and devices.
- Knowledge in basic welding and gas cutting jobs. (Advantage)
- Strong adherence to safety Standards, SOPs lockout/tagout, and emergency procedures.
- Strong situational awareness, problem-solving and communication skills.
